There is so much to be found here, distinctive and loyal to the genre, yet familiar to anyone who listens to rock, metal, pop, techno, jazz and even classical.

Wondering if anyone out there had any favorites to share, I'd kick the list with Maaya Sakamoto, Mai Yamane, and Kenji Kawai as favorite performers/arrangers. Regarding anime by title, I think Record of Lodoss War, Cowboy Bebop, and Jinki (matching the previous line-up) have some impeccable music. Xenosaga (if this counts), Air TV and Inuyashi have great material also.

Any other recommendations out there?

Anything by Yoko Kano.  The best anime composer IMO.  Her credits include: Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, and Wolf's Rain.

Yoko Kanno, obviously (add Escaflowne to that list, too, along with Macross).  And if you listen to Maaya  Sakamoto, you've likely heard Kanno because they've worked together multiple times.
Kanno has a band, called The Seatbelts.

Also Maaya Sakamoto, Utaka Hikaru (Kingdom Hearts theme songs), Kanon Wakeshima (Vampire Knight closing songs), Beat Crusaders (Beck, Bleach), BoA (Serial Experiments Lain, Inu Yasha), Lena Park (Romeo X Juliet OP), Atari Kousuke (Natsume Yuujinchou), The Pillows (FLCL), Orange Range (Bleach, Code Geass), Jinn (Blood +, Code Geass), Ayumi Hamasaki (Inu Yasha), and so on and so on.

There's so much fantastic music out there.

Don't know if you guys watch Bleach, but basically every single opening song (it changes each season) kicks complete butt.
